-The Sketchbook Project

Have you heard of the Sketchbook Project?  I just discovered it and plan to participate.  Its a traveling library of artists' books.  Thousands of creative people around the world are participating.  What a fantastic way to get your mojo going!  Set yourself up for a drawing a day, or choose one of their categories and design your book around that. Here are some of the topics:

Travelogue
Memoir
Narrative
Atlas
Almanac
Chronicle
Sketchbook
Chapbook
Documentation
Photo Log
Dwellings
Strangers
Participate
Diagrams
Warnings
Lists
Creatures
Dinosaurs
Upstairs
Mystery

Here's how it works:

  1. Contact ArtHouse Sketchbook Project at:  http://www.arthousecoop.com/sketchbookproject/
  2. Order a sketchbook (proceeds go to the traveling and archiving in the Brooklyn Art Library)
  3. Create a fantastic masterspiece before January 15th
  4. Mail your creation back to them
  5. Become a part of a global traveling show which will bring your book to some great venues like:
  • Taste of Chicago at Hyde Park Art Center
  • Luminato Festival at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, Canada
  • Virginia Highlands Summerfest, MASS Collective in Atlanta, Georgia
  • Portland Zine Sumposium in Portland, Oregon
  • San Francisco, California
  • SXSW Co-Lab Project Space in Austin, Texas

Here is a little more info from the project description:

OK, so what's The Sketchbook Project?

The Sketchbook Project is a worldwide creative experience. Together, thousands of regular people from around the world will form a traveling library of handmade books.

How does this whole thing work?

We like to think of the project as being community funded. A small group of people would not be able to create a giant traveling library and exhibit it across thousands of miles. But when 10,000 people get together with a common purpose, we can create something uniquely awesome.

Once you receive your book in the mail, it’s time to go crazy! There are very few rules about what you can do with your book, so we strongly encourage you to let your imagination off the leash. Draw in your book, cut it into pieces and glue it back together, sleep with it under your pillow, write about your trip to the lake, tell the story of how you lost your keys that one time, write a poem about how the summer makes you feel warm inside, stare at your book until the night before the deadline and then feel inspired by the impending doom of the due date and bust out the most amazing work you’ve ever made, use your book as a release for all those stresses you’ve been under, or just sketch. The choice is yours.

OK, so are you in?  I will be starting my sketchbook as soon as I receive it in the mail.  Not sure yet what category, but I'm thinking about mark-making.  A book of marks.

Email me (use the contact link above) to let me know if you are interested in doing this as a group with me.

Here is their website so you can check it out:  http://www.arthousecoop.com/sketchbookproject/

Fun!!!

p.s. I'm not associated in any way with this project.  All proceeds go to Arthouse Coop Sketchbook Project.
