-Living at Water's Edge

The Gulf of Mexico beaches are so incredibly beautiful that inspiration is around every corner.  I live on a little barrier island off the west coast of Florida.  Anna Maria Island is only seven miles long, yet the colors, textures and patterns are endless.  As an artist, I am always looking for images and inspiration around me.

The colors in the Gulf are my greatest inspiration.  Teal, aqua, turquoise.  Ten shades of blue and sky everywhere. Water patterns with translucent blues and greens are mezmerizing.

I use these colors for inspiration in my art.  Working with handmade papers and recycled materials, I attach them to a canvas, seal them with gesso and then layer thin glazes over these textures.  I will layer a teal translucent glaze over a sky blue, then as it dries add another layer of blue or green.  The result is a delicate transition of color that changes with light.

I make a point of walking the beach every morning and evening to remind myself of how grateful and lucky I am to witness this beauty.  I use the colors in my paintings to claim the sea color as part of me.

The texures of the waves finds its way into all my work.  I use glass beads and textured papers to capture the patterns.  Each element in my paintings are a testament to the beauty that surrounds me at water's edge.
